Question: Are there any areas of San Diego that we should avoid for safety reasons?
Answer: Fortunately, most places that visitors encounter while traveling to San Diego are all safe. Tourism is a major economy here, so keeping our tourists safe and comfortable is a priority.
Stick to the major tourist areas like Old Town, Mission Bay, the beaches, theme park neighborhoods and Balboa Park and you'll be just fine. The downtown area is thriving and definitely worth a visit, but always be careful of straying too far from the action, especially at night.
If a quick trip to Tijuana, Mexico, is on your agenda, double check the US Department of State's travel advisory for the area, as crime has risen dramatically there.
Happy travels!
