Even after many years and trips to the San Diego Zoo, this park is still a great day out for our family. And we bet you and your family will fall in love with it, too. There are often new exhibits to explore and new animals to discover. Even if you're here just for a few days or didn't bring the kids, this Zoo is a must for any visitor.

Sitting on 100 acres of land, this is one of the largest zoos in the United States, and is home to thousands of animals, including some extremely rare and highly endangered species. The zoo is also home to an incredible botanical collection, with more than 700,000 exotic plants on site.

Tips for a Day at the Park:
  • Bring snacks and/or picnic lunch. The concession stands are expensive and except for Albert's Treehouse Restaurant, the food isn't very good. Picnic lunches can be eaten outside the park at tables nearby.
  • No straws are allowed in the Park, so bring sippy cups for smaller kids.
  • Wear comfortable shoes. The Zoo covers a large area, with hills and canyons, so little kids will tire quickly. If you require assistance, strollers, wheelchairs and motorized chairs are available.
  • Minimize walking by riding the Guided Bus and Skyfari Aerial Tram to get around.
  • Night time is the right time to catch some animals at their most active. There really is nothing like hearing the roar of a lion as he paces just a few feet away from you.
  • Visiting the zoo more than once or twice? Get a Annual Membership. The annual pass is a terrific value and includes benefits like discounts to the restaurants and shops, passes to the Sky Tram and buses and even a free admittance ticket!

The San Diego Zoo houses some of the world's most exotic mammals, such as the Binturong, which is native to Southeast Asia. There is also an amazing aviary and the zoo has been working to breed and reintroduce several breeds of bird to their native habitats, including the California Condor and the Hawaiian Maui Parrotbill.

When visiting the zoo, there are different ways to enjoy the many different exhibits. For instance, you can take the guided bus tour, which offers tours spoken in English, Spanish, and French. They also offer bus tours for the hearing impaired. For the more daring spectators, there is always the Skyfari sky tram that will allow you to see the entire park high above the tree tops.

The 3 Boys In San Diego Family Say You've Got to See:

  • Panda Research Station. A rare chance to see these lovely animals.
  • Children's Zoo. Enjoy the Petting Paddock and shows.
  • Gorilla Tropics and Absolutely Apes. Baby apes will keep you entertained.
  • Reptile Mesa. Look for the Albino Boa Constrictor!
  • Polar Bear Plunge. Watch polar bears underwater.
  • Plan ahead and buy tickets to the San Diego Zoo at discounted prices. We'll show you how.

The Zoological Society of San Diego was formed in 1916 by Dr. Wegeforth, and currently holds the largest zoological membership in the world with more than half a million memberships. Members can visit the zoo free of charge, and save money in many of the zoo's other attractions such as the gift shop and special events.

If you're planning a trip to the San Diego area, make sure to set aside a day to visit the San Diego Zoo. It's a treat that will be enjoyed by the entire family, and you'll have a chance to see plants and animals you never knew existed.
