What's the Tower of Terror California Adventure park like?
Honestly? Fun! And terrifying!
I'm petrified of heights. And ghosts. And sudden drops. Yet, this ride is worth facing your fears for.
One of the most popular attractions at the Disney's California Adventure is the Tower of Terror, which delivers ghostly terrors and great thrills. Indeed, terror and thrills are in store for visitors who dare take on the 2 minute and 25 second-ride.
Lines can be long here, so take advantage of the Fast Pass ticket.
The inspiration for the Tower of Terror came from the popular television series "The Twilight Zone." The fictional Hollywood Tower Hotel, which is in itself inspired by the real Hollywood Tower, hosts the Tower of Terror. Many elements of a storyline from the television series have been adapted such as the lightning strike on the hotel's façade, resulting in the black scorch marks and the mysterious transportation of visitors to the Twilight Zone.
To add authenticity to the 1930s theme of the ghostly hotel, staff members are outfitted in costumes resembling the bellhops of that period. At over $1000 US apiece, the uniform is the costliest costume in all of Disney's theme park but the amount is well worth it, if only to be transported to a different, if creepy, place in time.
The Tower of Terror at Disney California Adventure is designed so there are three independent elevator shafts, with each shaft consisting of two vehicles and two load levels. Also, the design is such that while the lower vehicle is in its ride mode, the upper vehicle loads visitors although both vehicles load and unload at the same point.
The ride starts when the loaded vehicle pushes backwards while a star field and a purple spiral appear almost simultaneously, like the old Twilight Zone shows. Then the narrator starts his spiel, the door closes and the visitors are subjected to near-total darkness as the elevator rises to start the main ride.
And this is where the fun begins!
But shhhhhh...you'll have to ride it for yourself to see how it ends.
Words cannot adequately describe the terror and thrill of the Tower of Terror California Adventure so you simply must try it out for yourself!
The 3 Boys in San Diego Family Say:
The height requirement for this ride is just 40 inches, so even smaller children may ride.
As parents though, you should decide if they're ready for it. The ghosts can be creepy and the elevator drop is quite startling; you are literally lifted off your seat as you plummet to the ground. Our five year old hasn't tackled it yet and even our eight year old isn't a big fan.
